It seems sleeping on a problem really does help you solve it. An article in redonline.co.uk highlights research conducted by the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University. They gave two groups of people a set of logic problems to crack. One group were given a chance to sit down and have a break and the other group were asked to go to bed and take a nap. The sleeping group, on waking, solved many more of the tricker problems. The theory is that when our brain goes in to sleep mode it has more capacity to make connections and so is more likely to come up with fresh solutions. By cutting out some of the everyday stimulus, we give our brain chance to focus on the issue we’re trying to work out.
