Thomas Edison has a lot to answer for it seems. According to Richard Wiseman, author of ‘Night School’ the lightbulb is public enemy number one when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. In the natural world, when the sun goes down our ancestors would naturally get sleepy and doze until dawn. That’s because when the human eye picks up falling light levels they tell the brain to produce the sleepy hormone – melatonin, and hey presto, our body knows it’s time to go to sleep. The trouble is that these days we can cheat all this with just a flick of a switch. So, if you want a good night’s sleep the first thing to do is cut out the light. Even a little bit of a glow in your bedroom can get in the way. And yes, I’m afraid that does include your iPad. Sorry.
