W Hong Kong, Kiss the Moon the Moon Sleepover Review

Choosing a hotel in Hong Kong is always a dilemma. Whether to stay in the middle of all the ex-pat action on Hong Kong Island or to stay Kowloon side where you get the views of the harbour and the promised of quick zip to the airport and back. One you’ve made your mind up on that, it’s a case of doing some homework to help make the right choice. There are so many tempting new places popping up it’s a case of which one turns your head. After a 12 hour flight from London you need to land knowing you are in a place where your jet lag woes will be smoothed away and you have the best chance of getting your sleep body clock back on track.

One of our top choices then is the W hotel. Just a fast train ride away and a short walk through a shopping centre away from the airport on Kowloon side with a bit of luck you’ll be in your room 40minutes after picking up your luggage from the carousel. Then let the party begin. Here’s how we scored the W on our last visit as a place to uncrumple and lay your weary head…

Comfort level: 9.5 out of 10 – There’s something about this place that makes us go ‘ahhhhh’. The buzzy public areas always make us want to glam up and drink cocktails but as soon as you get to your room it’s all about soaking in the deep bath, playing with the bliss spa goodies and then sinking back in to the brilliantly comfy beds in your PJ’s – Hong Kong Time Out in hand and ready to plan tomorrow’s outing. The beds really are pretty amazing. A machine for sleeping in. We’re not sure what makes them work so well but it’s easy to see the thinking that’s gone in to every element. The rooms are effortlessly cool in design and so well throught through you’ll not want to leave. The good news is there’s no need to. Just press the ‘Whatever, Whenever’ button and the slick W team at the other end will make sure you get what your heart desires. Must get one of those installed at home…

Noise level: 9.5 out of 10 – Hong Kong hotels are usually high rise (our room was on the 33rd floor) so the noises of the 24/7 hustle and bustle stay well below at street level. Inside the corridors are padded in wall to wall thick carpets, the lifts are in the centre so can’t disturb. The end result – silence.  Lovely.

Light level: 9.5 out of 10 – Lighting at the W isn’t just functional – it’s decorative. Our bathroom had four lighting options – from magnified mirror spot lighting right through to an Alice in Wonderland style decoration in the mirror wall behind the sink. All pretty wow. But our favourite thing is the bedroom lighting as the thinking is all done for you. Built in to the wrap around bedside table are three buttons – Day, Night and Dream. Just press the one you want and the lighting magically transforms the room. How easy is that?

Temperature level: 8 out of 10 – It was 33 degrees celsius and thunder and lightening on our last visit. Being 33 floors up meant we were reliant on the air con. We’re not a fan of being in an closed box but at least the temperature controls worked and were silent.

Care level: 10 out of 10 – The W staff take some beating when it comes to service. The concierge team are so well trained you’ll wished they were able to stay looking after you forever. (Two small examples of them going over and above – we had a parcel to deliver somewhere and Terry in the concierge team insisted he take it there in person. When we asked for a letter to be printed out they noticed a small typo and corrected it for us before printing and then emailed the corrected file to us. Just another reason to fall love with Hong Kong!) On top of all that, the rooms are well equipped and every detail considered and catered for. If there’s something you need, they’ll sort it. We bet you.

Total score: 9.5 ZZzzz’s out of 10 – We’re tempted to give a 10 – very hard to see what they could do better other than not being high-rise which isn’t their fault. In our view it’s the perfect place to check in after a long haul flight. Thank you W for putting us back on our feet and ready for anything Asia has to throw at us.W Hong Kong, Kiss the Moon the Moon Sleepover Review
