WHY WE SLEEP BETTER IN OUR OWN BED
Heading off on holiday this month? Don’t be surprised if you don't quite sleep as well as you do at home when you first arrive.
Scientists have discovered something called the ‘first night effect’. It seems that unfamiliar surroundings make is harder for us to feel safe and to fully relax. We might not be aware if it but our subconscious mind doesn’t fully switch off when we are trying to sleep somewhere new. In fact our brain behaves like a dolphin’s brain, switching off one half at a time though the night rather than powering down completely. This all means it takes us longer to fall asleep and we sleep a shorter amount than we tend to in the comfort of our own bed.
